Congratulations To Our McFadden Nature Center Architectural Design Winner
We are pleased to announce the recipients of the McFadden Nature Center architectural design competition. We had a tough time selecting just one recipient for the award, as there were so many amazing submissions from all over the world. To make it easier, we have selected 1st and 2nd place recipients, alongside 3 schools who have been awarded for participation! Thank you to all our participants, please see the full list below.
1st Place Recipient
The Straughn Trout Architects team below have been awarded $5,000 in total for their winning submission!
2nd Place Recipient
It was a tough one, so we awarded Veronica Scharf at 484 STUDIO $3,000 in total as a 2nd place recipient!
Congratulations to the 2 universities - Kano University, Nigeria and University at Buffalo, New York, who were awarded $2,500 each for their automatic entry into the competition by our participants who attend their program. And congratulations to our winning school - Florida Agricultural and Mechanical

Scope and Description:
The Nature Center location will be in Donalsonville, GA. The center will be built in a pasture that has low, gently rolling hills, with a pond that will be constructed at the bottom of a hill. This is surrounded by 1260 acres of woods and wetlands with 2 miles of river frontage on the Chattahoochee River. The chosen submittal may be used for design and construction. Construction of our center is anticipated to begin within 2 years of competition completion.
Education Center 10,000 sf / Lodge 10,000 sf (see attached project description or call for a copy).
Drawings can be sketched, drafted or generated on CAD
Showing both Lodge and Nature Center (these may be separate buildings, or they can be combined as one).

The McFadden Nature Center was named after Pat McFadden who loved the outdoors. He wanted to preserve this land, as well build a center that would have positive influences on local and regional visitors. The broad strokes of what we need follows below. Education Center (10,000 sf +)
Multipurpose/Educational rooms with tables and chairs for 32 students/ AV equipment
Large kitchen for cooking meals for up to 100 people. Eating will be outside.
Great room with displays of American animals and Indian artifacts and educational kiosks
Separate room for African animal mounts from Pat McFadden’s safaris.
Restrooms with changing stations.
(10,000 sf +)
Approx. 5-8 guestrooms, with private restrooms, for overnight visitors.
Large shared area with common restroom.
Kitchen with tables and seating for 16.
Covered meeting area for 100 people
Native plants only
Possible future addition of a community or large pool
Outdoor Barbeque area
Signage design (small and medium directional signs)
Overall Design Elements
